Dark Chocolate Maple Hot Cocoa

A thick, chocolatey hot cocoa with a hint of maple flavor

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup maple sugar see note
  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup see note
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chopped
  • splash of pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • whipped cream optional

Method
 

  1. Whisk together cocoa powder and sugar in a medium saucepan.
  2. Place over medium heat and slowly whisk in the milk.
  3. When hot, whisk in the maple syrup and chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is melted.
  4. Season with a pinch of salt and pour into 2 large mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or maple sugar crystals.
