Dark Chocolate Maple Hot Cocoa

A thick, chocolatey hot cocoa with a hint of maple flavor

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup maple sugar see note
  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup see note
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chopped
  • splash of pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • whipped cream optional

Instructions
 

  • Whisk together cocoa powder and sugar in a medium saucepan.
  • Place over medium heat and slowly whisk in the milk.
  • When hot, whisk in the maple syrup and chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is melted.
  • Season with a pinch of salt and pour into 2 large mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or maple sugar crystals.
