Halloween was always a fun time when I was growing up. It seems every year my mom was sewing up some crazy costumes for my sister and I to wear. There was always some kind of party and always lots of decorations. Whenever I think of Halloween, I always remember my dad dressing up as Dracula.
Today I have a recipe for a rum punch Halloween cocktail that was inspired by my dad’s Dracula costume.
Blood of Vampires – A Halloween Cocktail
4 cups of rum
2 cups of red wine
the peel of three lemons
1 cup of sugar
1 cup lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
4 cups of water
1 blood orange sliced into thin disks
1 cinnamon stick
4 whole cloves
freshly grated nutmeg
In a large punch bowl muddle lemon peels and sugar together and let sit for about an hour. Add the lemon juice and muddle again until the sugar dissolves. Add the remaining ingredients and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Serve in glasses rimmed with red candy “blood”. (Recipe below.)
Red Candy “Blood” for Rimming Cocktails
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup Karo syrup
1/2 cup water
red food coloring
Combine sugar, water, and Karo syrup in a heavy bottomed sauce pan. Cook over medium-high heat, without stirring until it reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer. Stir in food coloring. While the mixture is still hot dip in cocktail glasses. As the candy cools it will drip slightly down the glasses And harden in place. (To remove hardened candy after you serve the cocktail invert glasses, placing the rims into hot soapy water to soak for several minutes before washing glasses by hand.)
Yum! We make a vampire blood cocktail by layering Blavod Black Vodka over cranberry juice. I love the “blood” glass rim, that’s awesome.
