Reading is a great way to teach kids about new things and new experiences. If you’re planning a camping trip, what better way to get your kids excited then by sharing some camping-themed kid’s books with them.

I have one of those kids that is really only happy when he’s outside. He loves outdoor play, hiking and especially camping and we’re not doing one of these things he likes to read books about them. He’s had lots of outdoor experience in his three years and he loves books about the outdoors and especially camping-themed kid’s books. We’ve read many and these are a few of our favorites.
8 Books About Camping for Children
A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee – Chris Van Dusen
This is probably our FAVORITE camping-themed kid’s book. The pictures are beautiful and the story is funny, charming and fast-paced. If you are like our family and regularly have some sort of “mishap” while camping, you will enjoy this book about Mr. Magee and his dog Dee.
Curious George Goes Camping – Margret and H.A. Rey
I’ll be honest. I am not a fan of the Curious George books but my son’s name is George so, of course, he loves them. As usual, George causes trouble, upsets nearby campers, and gets into a lot of mischief until everything turns out great in the end. It’s a fun book for kids named George that also love camping! HA!
Oh, Beautiful Camping Site – Steve Herman
This book covers all different types of camping and the activities you might do while camping. The story has a fun rhyme and the pictures are nice.
When We Go Camping – Margriet Ruurs
I love this book because it is very instructional. It features real photos, vocabulary and teaches kids about what to expect while camping.
Oliver & Hopes Adventure Under the Stars
While this book is about camping, it is also about imagination. This book will inspire your kids to explore and imagine as they sit around the campfire. This book also benefits the United Healthcare Children’s Foundation.
S is for S’mores: A Camping Alphabet
Emerging readers need lots of alphabet books and this camping themed on is one of our favorites. As they go through the alphabet they teach about things you will do and need while camping, foods you will eat (S’mores) and things you will see. S is for S’mores is fun and colorful.
Speaking of S’mores…check out this fun twist on S’mores that is perfect for kids!
Goodnight, Campsite – Loretta Sponsler
Another fun book that focuses on more than just tent camping. It also covers all of the fun things that you will do during a day of camping and what nighttime will be like. This is a well-loved bedtime book in our house.
Flashlight – Lizi Boyd
This is a wordless book that deals with what might be going on outside of your tent. In the dark the outside world may feel scary but it’s not so bad when you see it with your flashlight.
